Embroidery exhibition
Sep. 20th, 2025 05:15 pmYesterday I took a long lunch break at work and popped over to the the local Embroiderers' Guild annual exhibition. It was held in a lovely old 1920s hall right next to the lake.
Pride of place on display was last year's winning entry (by popular vote) this stunning blackwork embroidery of one of Canberra's iconic bus stops.

Designed and stitched by Hazel Francis
Hazel was the reason I was intrigued enough to go along to the exhibition. She recently joined my spinners and weavers group (which is just down the hall from the Embroiderers' Guild) when she injured her wrist and couldn't embroider for ages. She's such as positive and adventerous spirit though, so she just wandered over with her wrist all splinted and asked if we could teach her to weave! Which of course we did. :)
I really liked these two sashiko pieces of unknown design by Janet Pearce.

This cushion stitched in colour changing floss was really fun.

And this piece is just brilliant. I love how clever use of lines creates such a feeling of depth and movement.
This little piece of beaded smocking was lovely too.

Designed and stitched by Fran Novitski
This ocean-inspired embroidery was really interesting. It's hard to see in the glare of the photo, but all these images were intricately embroidered. I like the mishmash of styles, almost like a mixed media piece. The dark blue panel with the jellyfish is definitely my fabourite.

Designed and stitched by Agnes Sciberras
There was quite a nautical theme at the exhibition.
This felted ammonite was great. I'm planning my own weaving art piece with ammonites, so I took photos of all the examples on display.

Designed and felted by Julia Knight
I loved this bead embroidery amethyst geode. The centre is real tumbled amethyst, surrounded by beads and thread.

Designed and stitched by Anne Ostini-Horan
But my favourite piece, and the one I voted for, was this beadwork bag also designed and stitched by Anne.

The ammonites are so perfect and neat and I really like the blend of colours.
After checking out the exhibition I browsed the ample destash tables and the sales tables. A cute embroidered knitting project bag had caught my eye as I walked in, but after 20 minutes of perusing the exhibition it had already sold! So I consoled myself by buying a small packet of tussah silk combed top fro the destash table.

These embroidery pieces you shared are so pretty. I especially like the amethyst geode by Anne Ostini-Horan.
