I know I just started weaving placemats, but I always make sure I have a queue of weaving projects. Having planned projects waiting to go is a good strategy to avoid decision paralysis and to keep making things. I often get asked how I have the time to make all the things I do. One of the answers to that is that I usually have things planned and ready to go.

So here's my next weaving plan. I'm going to make another V cowl for this unassuming ball of sock yarn.

Well I"ve got a nice draft all worked out, time to start weaving!

The project plan I'm trialing for this weave is one from the School of Sweet Georgia. The download is behind a paywall but I'm not too bothered showing it here because a) you can see almost all the details through a google image preview and b) as a project planner this one's a bit rubbish.

'Yarn chicken' is the game of knitting with a tiny amount of yarn and seeing if you win (and finish the project) or if the yarn wins (and your project is forever unfinished).

I'm playing yarn chicken here. I have a little corner of this shawl to knit in purple, but my purple is almost gone! And this is hand dyed yarn from Dyeing 4 Ewe that cannot be replicated, so if I run out there's no option to get some more.

Ok, let's chicken! )

I've finished my first cross stitch for the year.

This Sheridan wheel is another one owned by Canberra Spinners and Weavers. It's been sitting in a back room with the leather connector between the footman and the treadle had broken, making it wheel unusable. But I had some spare leather and some spare time, so why not give it a make over?

Here's the two V cowls I've finished, from the same design and plan. I planned to make them identical but then ran out of navy, so had to improvise a colourblock pattern for the second one.

So I was talking aboout maybe getting more stash. Well I did not exactly sleep on the idea. So here's me flashing my stash!

I picked up this pile of alpaca roving from the Canberra Spinners and Weavers recycling room. Plus a boat shuttle, because it was cute and pretty.

I really like playing with weaving software. I find it fun to play around with colours, patterns, combinations of both and just experimenting. I currently have Fiberworks, which is the most popular and 'industry' standard, but I also used Weave Design for a few years, which is free to use and has pretty good functionality. And the draft editing fuction in handweaving.net is also brilliant, especially the colour picking and editing options.

So here's my recent dabblings.

It's been a while since I showed this cross stitch project. It got sent to time out for a while because I noticed that something, somehwere had gone wrong and I got frustrated. I was going to ignore the miskates and make a post about how it was an imperfect cross stitch, which was a first for me, and isn't that a lovely bit of growth, moving past perfectionism, blah blah. Buuuuut, I'm not there yet. I did have to fix it.

Okay, now the spinning wheel(s) are nicely sorted it's time to focus on the freebie loom I picked up before Christmas.

The very first thing to tackle is the reed. It's quite rusted but I think otherwise in good condition. If I can't successfully remove the rust then it's $200-400 for a new reed. If I was keeping the loom I'd probably buy a new reed, but as I plan on donating it then I'd rather not outlay that kind of cash.

One of the things I love about my Saori loom is that you can buy prewound warps. These are warps wrapped around a cardboard tube that you can just slide onto your back beam and hey presto, your loom is ready to thread up.
Prepare for warp speed (it's really very slow) )

I'm procrastinating instead of finishing my woven V cowl. It's sitting on my loom waiting for me to do the V part, which is fiddly and finicky and not that fun. It's been sitting there for a week and I've been avoiding doing it.

So I resolved that I would finally do it, went into my craft room and then immediately started faffing about with my stash! I mentioned recently that I almost have one empty stash storage basket and apparently I needed to fill it right this moment.

One of the things artists do is have fancy folders. Another thing they do is do the same thing over and over gain. Over the last six months I've been working on the same thing in slight variations: wave scarves.

Here's a video of Wee Maggie in action. She's a little Porche of a wheel! Very fast and smooth, a real joy to spin on.

I forgot to mention earlier: both the Sheridan Macarthur wheel and this Wee Maggie are double drive wheels. I found two of Jillian Eve's videos invaluable in understanding how these wheels work, how to set their drive bands and how to adjust their tension properly. These videos are her Double Drive Spinning Wheel Setup and How To Tie A Drive Band Onto Your Double Drive Spinning Wheel The Right Way. Almost everything crafty I do I learned through online videos. They're an amazing resources and Jillian Eve is so generous in sharing her knowledge and a pleasure to watch.

This started as a quick post about finding what I needed in stash, but became a bit more philosophical.

Almost everyone (including myself) talks about stash in a negative light. Having too much. Being overwhelmed. Stashing down. Making from stash. Dying and leaving all your stash behind (horror).
Oh the horrors... )

Well, this could become a problem. I've brought home another wheel to restore.

This one is, according to the handwritten notes on the bottom, a Wee Maggie wheel. It was made in 1983 by M. N. Cork in Tumut, and is the 57th Wee Maggie made.

I kept a log of the books I read and games I played in 2024.

First impressions, I thought I would play more games and read less books! But my work has an avid book culture, which I've been enjoying. I used to read constantly as a kid but got burnt out of reading during uni and my early career. I'm enjoying reading for pleasure again.

So this year I'm going to work on my Fancy Folder and keep better notes of what I plan, sample and weave.

I'm repeating a weave that I did last year so for this project I'm mostly taking notes to get in the habit of taking notes, as well as taking a project planning sheet for a spin. Read more... )

AI use statement

I sometimes hand write posts on a TCL NXTPAPER tablet that uses an AI Large Language Model (LLM) to convert my handwriting to text.

I do not intentionally use generative AI in anything that I make but note that I use apps (Microsoft Office, Canva, etc) that have integrated AI. These may have hidden AI 'features' operating in the background or offer assets that may be AI generated and not labelled as such.

To the best of my knowledge any content made by other people that I use or link to does not use generative AI.
